This site contains a set of guides for users of the Jaws screen reader. They cover various aspects of Windows and a few useful applications, and they will also be useful to users of other screen readers. All the guides are free.

Audacity 2.1.3

The Jaws guide to Audacity has been updated for version 2.1.3 of this free multi-track audio editor. New features and changes which are relevant to users of screen readers include:

  • There are new commands for moving to the next or previous label which read the name and number of the label, and there’s a “type to create a label” setting which you can turn off so that you don’t accidentally create labels.
  • You can now select a time range using the stored cursor position.
  • The keystroke for Play/Stop and set cursor is now the letter X – it was Shift + A in previous versions of Audacity.

The Taskbar on Window 10, Anniversary update

The Jaws guide to the Taskbar on Windows 10 has been updated to cover the Windows 10 anniversary update. As before, it covers the Start menu, search, Cortana, the taskbar buttons, the notification area, and notifications.

File Explorer on Windows 10

There’s a new Jaws guide to File Explorer on Windows 10. It includes a detailed description of how to use the ribbon.

Audacity 2.1.0

The Jaws guide to Audacity has been updated for version 2.1.0 of this free multi-track audio editor. New features include:

  • A new recording meter, which is more accessible – the peak level during a monitoring session can be read by screen readers.
  • A new improved Noise reduction effect, which replaces the Noise removal effect.
  • A limited introduction of real-time preview for effects.
